From player to coach: ECC alums lead the way
Elgin Community College Athletics works to recruit, build, and engage student-athletes to win both in the classroom and on the court or field. The ECC athletic department supports ten sports, and behind each team is a coach who works to guide the players through the ups and downs of each season.

The Helper: Michael Lacala
When Michael Lacala decided to enroll at Elgin Community College, it came with his parents' support, but not with some difficulties along the way. When Lacala's parents were 18, they immigrated to the United States in search of a better life for themselves.
On Board: Alumnus returns to serve students
Sergio Rodriguez, ’06, knows what it’s like to be a student at Elgin Community College. Now serving as a member of the District 509 Board of Trustees, he plans to put those experiences to work on behalf of students and district residents.
ECC alum Shelby Ann Taylor excels in Pacemaker Awards
ECC alum Shelby Anne Taylor, ’21, former Observer editor-in-chief, earned 3rd place in the Story of the Year Feature Writing category of the Pacemaker awards from the Associated Collegiate Press. The Observer is Elgin Community College’s student-run newspaper.
The Musician: Frank Catalano
Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Frank Catalano has graced stages across the globe with his Frank Catalano Quartet jazz band. A former Elgin Community College Jazz Band member, Catalano’s musical journey has seen him collaborate with iconic American rock band The Smashing Pumpkins on six albums.
